City Works: Inspiration behind my new series

Maps

I have collected maps all my life. It comes from my dad, he collected maps. As a kid, I never really understood WHY he liked maps so much. When he would pull off on the side of the road to unfold his large map for directions, I just enjoyed the patterns, the colors, and the layout. I was always amazing when he read the lines and then an hour later we arrived at our new destination. The adventure in it all enamored me.

Of course, back then you actually needed a real-life map to get somewhere new. Iphones and internet didn't exist. Let's all take a moment to think about that. iPHONES AND THE INTERNET DID NOT EXIST. There was no quick "rerouting, or "make a u-turn" or punching into google how to get to the nearest grocery store. Back then every adventure you sought lied between you and that map. What a thrill, right? What a raw connection from lines on the paper to feeling every curve and notch in the road. It taught our society to be obversate, remember landmarks, and soak in daily travel.

My latest series is inspired by my childhood love of maps. These works are to help connect you to your travel adventures, your hometown, or your new home! They are to remind you of all the work it took to build your community. To call attention to all the diversity and individuality that makes your community vibrant and bold. Each pattern, layer, and buidling block is to inspire you explore, embrace playfulness, and encourage you connect to your community.
